    The EUISS report 'Global Trends 2030: Citizens in an Interconnected and Polycentric World' was launched in Washington, D.C on 9 May 2012 in partnership with the Atlantic Council. Following a welcome by Banning Garrett, Director of Strategic Foresight Initiative at the Atlantic Council, an introduction was made by H.E Ambassador João Vale de Almeida, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to the United States. The report was then presented by James Elles MEP and EUISS Director Álvaro de Vasconcelos.

    The latest EUISS book ‘Listening to Unfamiliar Voices – The Arab Democratic Wave’ was launched in Brussels on 30 March 2012. The book, written by the EUISS Director Álvaro de Vasconcelos, was presented to Ambassadors, high profile journalists and EU officials in attendance.

    In March 2012 the EUISS and the EU Delegation to the United States organised a briefing session for a group of aspiring American journalists in Brussels. Following this event, the EUISS, in partnership with the Medill School at the Northwestern University in Chicago, published the best work of selected students here online.

    A roundtable discussion was organised on 8 March 2012 on the topic of Israel's internal tensions in a changing region where brief presentations were given drawing on recent research carried out by speakers on, respectively: Israel’s Palestinian minority; Israeli territorial identity; and Israel, the EU and international law. The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss a variety of questions with external experts, EUISS staff and a Paris-based audience.

    With the fast-moving developments in the Arab world creating wholesale changes in the international arena, the EUISS released this multi-author report as a response to the uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt and the ‘democratic wave’ that has struck the Arab world. Clearly, these democratic uprisings call for a radical shift in the way in which Euro-Mediterranean relations are formulated and conducted.

    This book launch presented two of the Insitute’s newest Chaillot Papers – the Institute’s flagship publication. The two papers are particularly timely, given the events unfolding around the Arab world.

    The first paper Violence politique et paix dans le monde arabe discusses the role of autocracy in the Arab world. Its author, Abdallah Saaf, introduced the the paper, with additional comments were provided by Azaam Majoub.

It analyses the main trends in the domestic strategic debate and the extent to which they are likely to shape China’s role in the international arena.
