Madrid Transatlantic Conference

07 June 2002

The Madrid conference was organised in cooperation with the Real Instituto Elcano, under the aegis of the Spanish Presidency of the European Union.  'Transatlantic Relations and the New Security Environment' went to the heart of the US-European relationship, the war against terror and the implications of that struggle for the conflict in the Middle East. Renovation and reform of the transatlantic relationship was the core message. That would require effective co-operation not just in the war against terror but also on transnational issues to deal with the unwelcome outcomes of globalisation. The world awaits the construction of an effective Common Foreign and Security Policy.
