From 1-2 July 2021, Daniel Fiott - Security and Defence Editor at the EUISS - contributed to a seminar on the Strategic Compass, which was organised by the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Belgian Ministry of Defence. The seminar focused on reinforcing governance and political ownership in the field of security and defence. The meeting focused on the Common Security and Defence Policy decision-making framework, budgetary considerations, how to best develop capabilities and how to structure the EU’s institutional framework for security and defence.

Daniel contributed to the seminar by moderating a number of the breakout sessions and serving as rapporteur to the main plenary. This plenary session was comprised of the Security Policy Directors (SPDs) and Defence Policy Directors (DPDs) of the EU Member States. This was the first time that the SPDs and DPDs have jointly met together. Finally, the seminar started with keynote speeches from the Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sophie Wilmès, and the Belgian Minister of Defence, Ludivine Dedonder.
