    Is Sudan ready for its referendum? This EUISS seminar report, ‘The Future of Sudan: challenges ahead’, analyses future scenarios for governance and conflict following the upcoming independence referendum in Southern Sudan on 9 January 2011. The report also proposes various roles the international community, the EU and regional organisations could play in Sudan.

    Co-hosted with the European Union Special Representative for the South Caucasus and with the financial support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, this seminar explored the EU’s non-recognition and engagement policy to Abkhazia and South Ossetia and the societal and economic aspects of its soft power approach.

    The third annual EU-Washington Forum, held on 8-9 November 2010 in Washington DC, addressed the challenge of strengthening the EU-US relationship post Lisbon and explored options for reinvigorating the common agenda.

    Taking place at the Pedralbes Palace in Barcelona, the EU Institute for Security Studies collaborated with the Centro de Estudios y Documentación Internacionales de Barcelona (CIDOB) for this seminar which aims to promote dialogue and debate among experts on Mediterranean issues.

    The EUISS Annual Conference 2010 took place this year in Paris on 21-22 October. This year’s theme centred on the changing role played by civil society in the global agenda. Its subsequent focus was on how best to capitalise on these ongoing transformations with a view to building an effective multilateral approach to global and regional problems.

    The annual India-EU forum on effective multilateralism aims to enhance the multilateral external dimension of the partnership between the EU and India by facilitating an exchange of views between policymakers and experts from both Europe and the Indian subcontinent.

    This final preparatory seminar for the EUISS Annual Conference 2010 took place at the European Commission in Brussels on 1 October 2010. The seminar was a joint initiative of the EUISS, the European Commission Directorate General for Research and the United Nations University (UNU-CRIS). The main talking points of the seminar included the role of civil society in the implementation of international agreements on areas ranging from human rights protection, to peace keeping, fair trade, environment and health protection.

    This preparatory seminar for the EU-Washington Forum 2010 took place at the Center for Transatlantic Relations at Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, DC on 20 September 2010. The main talking points of the seminar included the role of innovation in 'smart economies', new skills for new jobs and the implications for transatlantic cooperation.
