    With the fast-moving developments in the Arab world creating wholesale changes in the international arena, the EUISS released this multi-author report as a response to the uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt and the ‘democratic wave’ that has struck the Arab world. Clearly, these democratic uprisings call for a radical shift in the way in which Euro-Mediterranean relations are formulated and conducted.

    This book launch presented two of the Insitute’s newest Chaillot Papers – the Institute’s flagship publication. The two papers are particularly timely, given the events unfolding around the Arab world.

    The first paper Violence politique et paix dans le monde arabe discusses the role of autocracy in the Arab world. Its author, Abdallah Saaf, introduced the the paper, with additional comments were provided by Azaam Majoub.

    Is Sudan ready for its referendum? This EUISS seminar report, ‘The Future of Sudan: challenges ahead’, analyses future scenarios for governance and conflict following the upcoming independence referendum in Southern Sudan on 9 January 2011. The report also proposes various roles the international community, the EU and regional organisations could play in Sudan.
