Herders-farmers conflicts in the Sahel: second EUISS-COAFR breakfast meeting

02 April 2019

On 2 April, the EUISS and the Africa Working Party of the Council of the EU (COAFR) jointly organised the second informal breakfast meeting on sub-Saharan Africa in Brussels. The informal meeting focused on intercommunal violence between herders and farmers in the Sahel, and how it affects wider security and stability in the region.

Professor Mirjam de Bruijn (Leiden University) presented her work on the dynamics of pastoralism in the Sahel and early findings from fieldwork research in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger. Participants then exchanged views on the effectiveness and sustainability of current interventions to mitigate intercommunal violence. The informal breakfast meetings are coordinated and chaired by EUISS Senior Analyst Giovanni Faleg.
