EUISS workshop on European Defence: after the EUGS and before Brexit
On 6 July 2016, the EUISS welcomed a group of experts and officials to discuss the current state of affairs and future opportunities for European defence policy. Taking place squarely after the British referendum and the launch of the EU Global Strategy on Foreign and Security Policy (EUGS), the event centred on the impact Brexit may have on the European defence technological and industrial base, parameters to ensure an ambitious – yet realistic – follow-on EUGS sub-strategy on security and defence, as well as the defence-related accomplishments of the Dutch presidency. Equally emphasising industry and capabilities, the participants identified next steps that can strengthen European defence in the coming months in parallel with the European Commission’s Defence Action Plan.
