The momentum around rearmament, strategic autonomy, and a more integrated European defence identity is growing. In this evolving landscape, the Western Balkans can no longer be viewed solely as security recipients: they must also be considered as contributors.
The region’s geopolitical relevance, security expertise, and long-standing cooperation with European partners offer concrete pathways for Western Balkans actors to step up as partners in strengthening European defence and resilience. From participation in EU civilian and military missions and operations to initiatives countering hybrid threats, the region is demonstrating a growing capacity to support shared security objectives.
Recognising this potential, the conversation explored how the Western Balkans can align more closely with Europe’s evolving defence agenda — deepening cooperation, advancing common priorities, and reinforcing their strategic relevance as future EU members.
