"China's port involvement doesn't follow a simple acquisition logic, but rather a multi-layered geo-economic strategy," noted Tim Rühlig in Table.Briefings (in German) in an article looking at how China creates global dependencies through its port-related projects in almost every region of the world.
In another interview with Table.Briefings on EU states pushing for a tougher stance on China, Tim argued that Europe should not "unilaterally pursue a confrontational approach" but instead seek bilateral consultations with Beijing. At the same time, he stressed that Germany and Europe must finally recognise that dependence is not one-sided: "It is not only Europe that remains dependent on China, but China is also dependent on Europe. On that basis, we should actively defend our own interests."
