Huawei's provision of critical, cheap technology across much of the world, alongside its growing role in the AI industry, has made the company increasingly important to global technological infrastructure.
"Today, these dependencies are giving China leverage," said Tim Rühlig to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. "There is a vital interest of the party-state that Huawei stays technologically on top, that it is competitive, that it prospers," he argued.
