As we mark four years since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Ondřej Ditrych joined France24's 'The Debate' to discuss what comes next after the Munich Security Conference.

Ondřej remarked that the Munich Security Conference focused heavily on the transatlantic alliance, with particular attention given to Marco Rubio's speech. He noted that two distinct messages emerged from the US administration: first, that values change and therefore should not serve as the foundation of the alliance, which instead ought to be based on interests. According to Ondřej, there is a problem with this argument since interests ultimately stem from values and are also subject to change, making them a potentially unstable basis for long-term cooperation.

Second, Rubio proposed a value framework for Europeans to sustain the alliance, though this framework might not be acceptable to the majority of Europeans. While his speech was seen as less adversarial than JD Vance's the previous year, Ondřej argues that it was very much about Europeans embracing a civilisational vision centred on a shared Western destiny.
