In an interview with Helsingin Sanomat (in Finnish), Joris Teer noted that the effects of export restrictions in the defence industry are greater than is publicly acknowledged. Companies are reluctant to speak openly about supply difficulties at a time when Europe is preparing for the threat posed by a hostile neighbour.
"Export controls give China a way to slow the growth of the European defence industry just as Europe is rapidly trying to catch up with Russia in arms production."
According to Joris, export controls also serve as a tool for espionage. He warned that Chinese authorities "may demand very detailed information from a company applying for an export license about products, uses, production sites and delivery routes." That gives China a way to map out where the sensitive areas of the European economy – and the defence industry – are, he explained.
