Giuseppe Spatafora spoke to Sestry (in Polish) about the growing divergence between the EU and NATO over the future role of the US in the European security architecture.
"Although both NATO and the EU support Ukraine, their approaches do not always align," he noted, using as an example the serious disagreements over whether the EU's €90 billion loan to Ukraine should be used to purchase American weapons through NATO mechanisms or allocated to European armaments.
He added that Europeans must prepare for scenarios in which key elements of NATO, primarily the role of the United States, may be unavailable. In such a context, further integration of Ukraine into the European defence architecture and providing Kyiv with credible security guarantees become even more important.
