Bojana Zorić joined Al Jazeera Balkans' Kontekst to discuss the future of NATO and transatlantic relations under a Trump 2.0 presidency, as well as its implications for the Western Balkans.

She emphasised that if European NATO members fail to meet the proposed 5% defense spending target, the US could scale back its role in the region - placing KFOR and, by extension, EUFOR Althea (which relies on NATO through the Berlin Plus agreements) in a precarious position.

A diminished US presence would test the EU’s capacity to maintain regional stability. She also highlighted the likelihood of an intensified transactional approach to foreign policy, building on patterns from president Trump’s first term – an approach that could appeal to certain political and business elites in the Western Balkans. Finally, she noted that malign foreign influence, which remains deeply embedded in the region, could serve as a key area for strengthened cooperation between the US administration, NATO, and the EU.
