Following the first meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping since 2019, the US President spoke of a "great success" while Beijing merely emphasised "consensus".
"Each party is trying to present the meeting, which is just a meeting without any formal agreement, as a success. […] In practice, there is not much," said Alice Ekman to Radio France's 'Les Enjeux Internationaux' show.
Discussing China's dominance in rare earths, Alice added that "we are in a period of transition. Strong interdependencies still exist, including between markets governed by states that disagree about the ongoing wars or crises. Today, these interdependencies can still be leveraged, from the American side and the Chinese side alike."
On China's "dangerous coalition" with Russia, Iran and North Korea, Alice warned that "if relations are bad on the transatlantic side, a coalition is emerging on the Chinese side that we should really take seriously because it is increasingly engaging in trade that circumvents sanctions."
