Alice Ekman joined France Culture's podcast 'Entendez-vous l'éco?' for an in-depth interview on the Sino-American trade negotiations and the consequences for Europe, how China has ended up in a position of power, and what the outline of its upcoming 15th Five-Year Plan reveals.
While the US and China reached a truce in their tense commercial relations, Alice pointed out that there is no formal agreement, and even the Phase One agreement of 2020 was not properly implemented. This, in addition to tensions around the Taiwan Strait and the evolving Russia-China relations, means that the implementation of what was announced as part of the deal is uncertain.
"We will have more clarity [in April at Trump's next visit to China]. Not only regarding the formal engagements and their application, but also regarding the political and geostrategic issues that could call these engagements into question," remarked Alice. (in French)
