With FCAS, the German-French-Spanish fighter jet project, at a standstill, what options does Berlin have? Luigi Scazzieri told Euronews that Germany could either develop its own fighter jet—which he believes is "highly unlikely"—join the British-Italian-Japanese Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), or purchase additional US-made F-35s, since "there is no European equivalent to the F-35 currently on the market."

When it comes to joining GCAP, cooperation in the programme is well under way, so slotting Germany in won't be easy, says Luigi. Because of Germany's decision to buy F-35s, the country "actually has no pressing need to develop another plane, so it may choose to invest in other priorities."
