Russia is using food as a silent weapon in its war of aggression against Ukraine, while also wielding it as geopolitical leverage in fragile regions to boost its influence.

In an op-ed for Le Grand Continent, Ondrej Ditrych and Tomáš Petříček analysed this underestimated form of power that Russia strategically deploys, and examined how the EU can counter it by rethinking food as a foreign policy tool.

"The primary objective of Europe's food strategy should not be to increase its market share abroad, but to leverage international alliances and offer better deals that contribute to greater global stability and justice. This means elevating food to the status of a geopolitical priority alongside security, energy, and digital infrastructure, while filling the gaps created by the end of USAID," explained Ondrej and Tomáš.
