Caspar Hobhouse's Brief 'The lifeblood of the military: The energy transition and operational capacity' was analysed in Numerama and Visegrád Post's articles examining how rising energy needs on the battlefield, driven by electrification and new weapon technologies, may lead to the military use of small nuclear reactors, alongside renewables.
The articles highlight Caspar's argument that current systems, which rely on local power grids and diesel generators, are vulnerable during conflicts due fuel supply risks. In the short term, the most promising options continue to lie in solar and wind power, especially in order to provide energy independence in remote or difficult locations.
In the long-term, however, Caspar argues that Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) have the ability to provide reliable, continuous energy flow, can be easily deployed in remote or high-risk zones, and are cheaper and quicker to build than full-scale nuclear plants.
