European Defence Innovation Day
On 31 May 2022, Daniel Fiott – Security and Defence Editor – represented the EU Institute for Security Studies at the first-ever European Defence Innovation Day (EDID). The Day was organised by the European Defence Agency and the French Presidency of the Council of the EU. Daniel was invited to moderate a high-level panel session on how to bridge the civil and defence innovation worlds. He was joined on stage by leading personalities from EU institutions, NATO, industry and the research community.
The panellists reflected on the challenges and opportunities that arise from civil-defence innovation synergies. Overall, the first EDID focused on disruptive technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and Quantum Technologies and it looked at EU policy proposals to strengthen European defence innovation.
