On 16 January 2023, the Institute welcomed Dr Marc Lynch to debate on the question "How can Europe make sense of the post-American Middle East?".

The United States have made it clear that it intends to pull back from the Middle East and refocus elsewhere. Every state in the region are now looking for security alternatives and adjusting their own foreign policy postures. Russia has exploited American apathy by expanding its role as security guarantor in the region and China has been rapidly expanding its physical footprint across the region.

Where does this leave Europe and what role should it play in an increasingly multipolar, post-American Middle East? This is the question we asked Dr Lynch.

Dr Marc Lynch is a professor of political science and international affairs at the Elliot School of International Affairs at George Washington University. In addition to his usual duties, he is also the director of the project on Middle East Political Science (POMEPS) and Director of the Middle East Studies department.
