13th high-level course on CSDP

From 14-15 May, the EUISS supported the European Security and Defence College (ESDC), the Cypriot Ministry of Defence and the Diplomatic Academy of Nicosia with the 13th CSDP high-level course 2017-2018. The course is designed to prepare select senior representatives from EU member states and EU institutions for roles in CSDP and the EU’s crisis management structures. The 13th course attracted participants from the European External Action Service (EEAS), the EU Military Staff (EUMS), Frontex, CSDP missions and operations, the European Union Satellite Centre (SatCen) and numerous member state representatives.

Initiating the course, Florence Gaub – EUISS Deputy Director – delivered a keynote lecture on the EU Global Strategy in a shifting global context. She also delivered a presentation on future trends in CSDP. Roderick Parkes – Senior Analyst – focused his presentation on the EU and the migration challenge, and he also moderated a discussion on maritime security and Europe. Finally, Daniel Fiott – Security and Defence Editor – presented his thoughts on future conflict trends and how they might affect CSDP deployments. He was also involved in a panel discussion that asked how the EU can achieve its new level of ambition on defence.
