on 22 May 2025, following an Africa Union- European Union ministerial meeting, the EUISS and ECDPM hosted a debrief of the meeting, bringing together African ministers, EU and AU officials, ambassadors and leading policy experts.
At the heart of our discussions: how to advance prosperity, peace and security, and multilateralism in today’s deeply fragmented world. From sombre reflections on global instability to a shared resolve for action, the tone was one of solidarity and ambition.
Despite the scale of the challenges, the mood was one of optimism. Representatives from the EU and the AU expressed strong alignment and commitment, even as they acknowledged that much work remains ahead of the next AU-EU Summit.
We were especially honoured to welcome:
- H.E. Thandi Moraka, Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, South Africa.
- H.E. Mulambo Hamakuni Haimbe, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Republic of Zambia.
- Mathieu Briens, Deputy Managing Director for Africa at the EEAS and Steve Lalande, Director of Partnerships and Resource Mobilisation at the African Union Commission, for a sharp and timely debrief of the main outcomes of the ministerial meeting and reflections on next steps in the partnership.
