US and EU approaches to Africa: where do we stand?

24 June 2014

The event sought to take stock of European and American approaches to Africa, and provided a forum for debate among scholars, policymakers, and practitioners from a range institutions and EU member states. Hosting some 20 participants, the workshop focused on the divergences and complementarities of US and EU policies towards Africa, as well as opportunities for increased coherence and collaboration.  The EUISS was pleased to welcome Matthew Walsh, Special Advisor to the Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, U.S. Department of State; Col. Ian Clark, Acting Director of Outreach, US Africa Command; Dr Joseph Siegle, Research Director of the Africa Centre for Strategic Studies; and Fernando Moreno, Senior Strategic Planner of the Crisis Management and Planning Directorate, European External Action Service.
