SAHEL CLIMATE CONFLICTS

25 February 2021

On 25 February 2021, the EUISS and the Africa Working Party of the Council of the EU (COAFR) held their tenth meeting to discuss Climate Conflicts in the Sahel.

The meeting examined the nexus between climatic/environmental factors and conflicts in the region, discussing whether (and what) climatic factors impact conflict variability and terrorism (and how).

Dr Luca Raineri (Sant’ Anna School of Advanced Studies) presented the main findings of his recent EUISS Policy Brief, and analysed the challenges facing climate change and environmental protection programs. He finally provided key recommendations to improve EU’s initiatives in the Sahel.

EUISS-COAFR meetings are coordinated and chaired by EUISS Senior Analyst Giovanni Faleg.
