On 22 April 2021, Daniel Fiott represented the EU Institute for Security Studies at an international conference organised by the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the EU, in partnership with the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA). Welcoming over 300 participants, the aim of the international conference was to encourage a reflection through three panels devoted to international cooperation in maritime safety, the Atlantic and the integration of maritime safety into the EU Strategic Compass. Daniel was invited to share his analysis on maritime security and the Strategic Compass. Drawing on his research, Daniel made a case for building on the Coordinated Maritime Presences pilot case, enhancing maritime surveillance, protecting critical infrastructure such as undersea cables and ensuring the freedom of the global maritime commons.
