On 17 March, Giovanni Faleg and Nad’a Kovalčíková presented the findings of the co-authored Brief “Rising hybrid threats in Africa: Challenges and implications for the EU” at the European Council’s Horizontal Working Party on Enhancing Resilience and Countering Hybrid Threats (HWP ERCHT).

The meeting analysed how sub-Saharan Africa is becoming a testing ground for hybrid threats, which are being manifested across the wider region, while exploring the potential implications of hybrid operations for European security and strategic interests and the ways to address them.

In addition, the EUISS Senior Analysts discussed how African countries may become operational hubs for hybrid activities, which could have a deteriorating impact on transnational security, also exacerbated by the geopolitical implications of the conflicts in other regions.
