The future of European defence

17 May 2016

On 17 May 2016, the EUISS hosted a launch event for the recently published Chaillot Paper ‘Envisioning European defence: five futures’. With long-standing constraints and an ever-increasing threat environment in and around Europe, this launch event provided a forum for analysts, policymakers and interested stakeholders alike to better understand how the choices of today will impact the European defence of tomorrow. Senior EU officials – including the Dutch Political and Security Committee (PSC) Ambassador Carola van Rijnsoever, Special Adviser on European Defence and Security Policy Michel Barnier, European Defence Agency (EDA) Chief Executive Jorge Domecq and Crisis Management and Planning Directorate Director (CMPD) Gabor Iklody – also commented on the five futures offered by the Chaillot Paper, discussing which are desirable and which are likely.
