On 12 May 2023, the EUISS and the Swedish Institute of International Affairs (UI) co-organised a panel discussion in Stockholm on the EU’s role as a security and defence policy actor in light of the war in Ukraine, Sweden’s EU presidency and application to NATO.

Sweden’s Defence Minister Dr Pål Jonson gave a keynote speech in which he emphasised support to Ukraine, affirmed Sweden's intention to be at the core of EU defence cooperation and underlined that a strong EU is not in contradiction to a strong NATO.

Following the speech, Deputy Speaker of the Swedish Parliament Kerstin Lundgren and EUISS Senior Analyst Dr Jan Joel Andersson discussed with the Minister the EU’s growing role in security and defence.

The discussion was moderated by UI Director Jakob Hallgren.
