EUISS-CSDS Korea Dialogue 2024
On 10 October, the Centre for Security, Diplomacy and Strategy (CSDS) and the EUISS were happy to welcome Korean think tank and industry representatives and former policymakers to Paris. During this closed-door dialogue, European and Korean participants proposed solutions to shared security challenges and strategies to strengthen economic resilience.
Participants addressed these critical issues affecting Europe and the Republic of Korea (RoK) in two panels. In the first panel, participants discussed shared challenges to EU and Korean security, with a focus on the interlinked military threats posed by revisionist powers, namely China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran. Participants assessed current efforts and future avenues for cooperation to strengthen the defence industrial bases of EU Member States and the RoK.
The second panel took stock of the resilience of the EU and Korean economies. Participants proposed strategies to reinforce the economies of partner countries, without distorting competition between likeminded states, for instance, because of unilateral subsidies. The risk of dependence on Chinese raw materials and manufacturing outputs received special attention. Finally, participants proposed strategies for de-risking and joint actions on resilience-building between like-minded partners.
