Daniel Fiott at the European Parliament

11 October 2018

On 11 October 2018, Daniel Fiott presented a study on ‘European Armaments Standardisation’ to the Subcommittee on Security and Defence (SEDE) at the European Parliament. The session was chaired by MEP Anna Fotyga and members of the European Parliament learned how armaments standardisation can be a way to reduce the costs of defence, enhance military interoperability, support cross-border defence cooperation and boost defence innovation. Daniel explained that initiatives such as the European Defence Fund and Permanent Structured Cooperation would benefit from embedding standardisation in their efforts. Using the examples of maritime information systems and remotely piloted aircraft systems, the SEDE subcommittee learned how military mobility, cyber defence and energy management for defence would benefit from greater civil-defence standardisation synergies.
