Climate and defence: actions and investments
On 6 December 2021, the EU Institute for Security Studies (EUISS) and the European External Action Service (EEAS) co-organised the second annual conference on climate change and defence.
Whereas the first annual conference analysed the November 2020 Roadmap on Climate Change and Defence, this second edition looked at climate-informed actions and investment. In particular, the conference analysed how data collection, ecological footprints, awareness raising and analysis feed into comprehensive assessments of climate-affected crises. Additionally, the conference underlined the importance of the defence sector’s role in generating innovative solutions to emissions produced by armed forces.
The online conference benefited from the participation of speakers from the EU Institutions and bodies (EEAS, European Commission, the European Defence Agency and the EU Satellite Centre), EU Member States (Netherlands and Slovenia), CSDP missions (EUAM Central African Republic), United Nations, NATO and think tanks.
Over 70 participants took part in the debate and they represented a range of affiliations including civil society and international partners. The EUISS and EEAS will organise the third annual conference during the course of 2022.
