The challenges from Russia and the imperatives – and dilemmas – of deterrence

25 November 2016

On 25 October, the EUISS, the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and the the EU External Action Service (EEAS) convened analysts and experts to discuss the challenges and dilemmas of Russia’s political agenda. The dialogue provided an opportunity for an exchange of views, analysis and research concerning Russian defence capacity and the country’s main political priorities. The workshop's debate was centred on the current state of play, but also on the impact of changing elements such as the expected shift in US foreign policy due to the results of the presidential election. This, in turn, led to a discussion on the EU’s relationship with Russia, as well as the potential for change given the looming elections in a series of European states.
