Food security is a highly complex, multi-faceted global challenge that involves many aspects. Virtually every policy area is connected to food security: from the economics of food price formation to environmental stress, from financial market dynamics to energy production and supply.
Despite the complexities of the food system and its current difficulties, policymakers should focus on the core issue of food insecurity: primarily by establishing a resilient and sustainable agricultural system suitable to the needs of small farmers. And the EU, as one of the largest donors of development aid, might consider doing more abroad of what it is doing at home; supporting farmers through spending on...

On 23 May, terrorists carried out two suicide attacks in northern Niger which targeted a camp of the Niger armed forces in the city of Agadez and a uranium site run by the French nuclear company Areva in the city of Arlit. During the attacks, around 20 people (most of them Niger soldiers) were killed.
Responsibility for the attacks was claimed by the terrorist group Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO), one of the three Salafi-jihadist groups that seized control of northern Mali after the military coup in Bamako in March 2012 only to be driven out of Mali following the French military intervention - Operation Serval - in January 2013. ...

Consequently, on 31 May, for the first time since the end of the 1975-90 civil war, the country’s parliament extended its own mandate for 17 months, further undermining already weak institutions at a time when Lebanon urgently needs a government capable of dealing with the spillover effects of the Syrian conflict – including sectarian violence in the northern city of Tripoli, Hezbollah’s open involvement in Syria itself, rocket attacks on southern Beirut and direct attacks on Lebanese Army soldiers. ...

Those ‘Core documents’ (vols. I-XI) soon became part and parcel of the toolbox of the still fledgling EU ‘security community’.

This Yearbook of European Security (YES) intends to build on that tradition while offering its readers a richer menu of food for thought.
