The European Union ended 2016 having agreed to a number of fresh initiatives designed to articulate (and act on) a new level of ambition for security and defence. This Brief assesses Permanent Structured Cooperation (PeSCo) as a potential game changer in the way EU member states cooperate on security and defence.

Security Monthly Stats (SMS) - No1 - 01 March 2017
The Security Monthly Stats (SMS) is a new publication by the EUISS which illustrates data relevant to the EU's external action using graphical elements.
The first EUISS SMS brings together defence data from the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) and the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) from 2016. Aggregating figures from the 28 EU member states, the graphics answer a series of questions about defence spending levels and arms exports.
