Russia in Africa

15 October 2020

On 15 October 2020, the EUISS and the European Council’s Working Party on Africa (COAFR) held their eighth meeting and first virtual teleconference to discuss Russia in Africa. Members of the European Council’s Working Party on Eastern Europe and Central Asia (COEST) also participated to the discussion.

The meeting looked at the growing Russian economic, political and military presence in sub-Saharan Africa and its implications for European interests and strategies. EUISS’ Dr Giovanni Faleg and Dr Stanislav Secrieru gave a reading of the drivers and modus operandi of the Russian strategy in Africa, and an explanation of Russia’s attractiveness for African countries. They finally explored the short and long-term implications for the EU.

EUISS-COAFR meetings are coordinated and chaired by EUISS Senior Analyst Giovanni Faleg.
